Rules

As an online community grows what was one implicit often needs to be written down and made explicit.

Our aim here with this code of conduct is not to dictate behavior, but to enshrine the spirit with which we see this community at its best. As always we seek to use this forum to promote immersive and experiential work across multiple disciplines, and to provide a common oasis and a thriving bazaar of intellectual and artistic debate.

  1. Always remember there is another human being on the other side of these pixels. If all goes well, I have weeded out the bots.

  2. When in doubt, send a message to the owner.

  3. Never publicly post in anger AT another group member. Either take it private or if you have no relationship with the other alert the owner.

  4. Ask clarifying questions if something seems off to you.

  5. Argue, when necessary, from good faith.

  6. Be prepared to support your arguments. If you’re not feeling like it, hold off on getting into a debate until you are. (Not every thread is a debate, but you know when you are in one.)

  7. Don’t expect an immediate response FROM ANYONE ON ANYTHING.

  8. Make requests, not demands. Ask others to consider another point of view or different behavior instead of insisting upon it. (That way it is on them if they refuse to consider a point of view.)

  9. No doxxing. Do not post privately-held data on any individual — group member or not — without their express consent. This will result in a permaban, no questions asked, doesn’t matter if you’ve read this code or not. (Note: publicly accessible information such as an office phone number listed on a website, does not count.)

  10. No deadnaming. Respect how people identify themselves. One warning, permaban on a second offense. That’s being lenient, don’t make us regret that. (Caveat: This is distinct from those who use stage/professional names. In the case of fraudulent behavior from an individual who uses an alias to perpetuate harm, contact the group admins & mods before sharing. Some situations are more complex than others.)

  11. Do not involve third parties in disputes without their consent. No families. No domestic partners, etc. Second parties to a matter may sometimes be appropriate to bring in to a matter — e.g. a production company that is currently employing someone who has defrauded patrons in the past — but every effort should be made to contact those parties privately first. Contact an admin or mod before proceeding publicly.

  12. No brigading, either on or off-board. There will be no coordination of social media attacks on this board, whether they manifest here or on the wider web. That’s will result in a ban.
In addition: anyone found to have co-ordinated, or participated in an attack within a post for the purposes of harassment will also be permabanned.
(Note: this is very specific. We know people discuss what happens in the group privately, and even in small groups. Lord knows we do in order to make policy decisions. This is about the behavior of those who are not parties to a dispute for the purposes of creating heat, not about checking in with others to make sure you have your facts straight and to find allies who have direct knowledge of events or analogous experiences. The later individuals have witness status and are protected. Those who want to stir shit are just trolls.)

  13. Do try to read whatever you’re reacting to in full before posting a response. Bonus points for reading the post summary AND the article, not just the headline! Double bonus points for reading all of the comments first (we know, we know, it’s hard). But really: it will make what you have to say better, more interesting, and hopefully useful to everyone and not just make you feel good for getting it off your chest. (We know, that’s not how Facebook is designed, but this isn’t Facebook. It’s just ON Facebook.)

Last — and certainly not least — the Golden Rule, as it was originally formulated:

Do not do to others what you wouldn’t want done to yourself.

The Admins reserve the right to sanction breaches of this code as they see fit. This notice was created July 13,2022 and will forever be upheld.
